INLAY NOTES FROM SHaK

Take one of the world's most original and accomplished jazz guitar stylists of modern times, add the towering presence of a mighty baritone sax and anchor it with one of the best bassists in the country and you have SHaK

Esmond Selwyn, George Haslam and Steve Kershaw

Esmond Selwyn has long been recognised as one of the UK's greatest performing jazz guitarists and educators - not just for his prodigious technique but also for his ability to create a fully contemporary guitar sound without showing the obvious rock influences present in the work of current stylistic leaders such as John Schofield and Pat Metheny. He is a driving player who can play delicately at one point and sound like a whole orchestra the next.

The quality of Esmond's playing has been formally acknowledged by some of the world's greatest jazz musicians: 'You sound great, boy' (George Coleman); 'Truth is - I've kept the cassette in the car - and played it many times en route, and enjoyed it each time' (Tal Farlow); 'You have great chops! My pleasure these days comes from listening to great jazz guitarists like yourself' (Tony Mottolla, Frank Sinatra's guitarist); 'Esmond has, in my opinion, a fingerboard technique second to none' (Ivor Mairants in The Great Jazz Guitarists)... a list of reviews and credits almost too many to mention.

Esmond has shared the bill at international jazz festivals with Chick Corea, Elvin Jones and Charlie Byrd, and has accompanied visiting American stars Art Farmer, Red Rodney, Bobby Shrew, Al Cohn and Jimmy Witherspoon.
